Maybe it’s the chain you wore every day for years, a gift you’ve outgrown, or your dad’s chain sitting in a drawer. You want to know what it’s worth, and you want a fair price if you sell. Here’s what to check before you sell a gold chain, in plain words.

Where Can I Sell My Gold Chain in Canberra?

You can sell your gold chain to Vivid Jewels, by appointment in Canberra. It’s a free, private quote with no obligation.

Your chain is tested and weighed in front of you and priced on the day’s gold price. If you like the price, you’re paid on the spot. Bracelets, pendants and signet rings are welcome too. See how it works on the sell gold in Canberra page.

Start With the Stamp

Most gold chains carry a small stamp on the clasp, or on a tag near it. The number tells you the karat:

  • 3759ct
  • 58514ct
  • 75018ct
  • 91622ct

The chain in this photo has 750 on its clasp, so it’s 18ct gold. No stamp? Old, handmade and overseas chains often have none, so a test will tell.

Weight Is What Counts

A gold chain is priced on its weight, its purity and the day’s gold price. That’s why a heavy 9ct chain can be worth more than a light 18ct one.

Your chain is weighed on a scale you can see, and every number goes into a spreadsheet you can take home.

Hollow or Solid?

Some chains are hollow inside. They look big and bold but weigh much less, so they hold less gold. Hollow chains often have small dents or kinks.

A solid chain of the same size is heavier and holds more gold. Either way, the scale tells the truth.

Every Style of Chain Is Welcome

Curb and Cuban

Flat, twisted links that lie neatly. A Cuban chain is a chunky curb.

Figaro

A pattern of short links, then one long link.

Rope

Strands twisted together to look like rope.

Belcher

Round, even links. Also called a rolo chain.

Box

Square links that look like tiny boxes.

Snake

Smooth, tight links that bend like a snake.

Every style is priced the same way: on its weight, its purity and the day’s gold price.

Chains With a Cross or Pendant

Many men’s chains carry a cross, a medallion or a pendant. You can sell them together, or sell the chain and keep the pendant.

If a pendant holds a Diamond or gemstone, it’s checked on its own by a gemstone expert, and you can keep the stone if you’d like.

Broken, knotted or missing a clasp? A chain with a snapped link, a knot or a missing clasp is still gold. It’s bought for its weight and purity, with no need to fix or untangle it first. Read about selling broken or scrap gold.

Plated or filled? A chain stamped GP, GF, RGP or HGE has a thin layer of gold over another metal, so it holds very little gold. Read how to tell if gold is real.

Designer and Resale-Ready Chains

A designer chain can be worth more than its gold. A solid chain in good condition may be cleaned up, re-polished and sold again, so it can be worth a little more too.

The extra isn’t always big, because getting a chain ready for its next owner takes real work. It’s a good ending though. Your chain gets worn again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I sell my gold chain in Canberra?

At Vivid Jewels, by appointment in Canberra. It’s a free, private quote. Your chain is tested and weighed in front of you, and if you like the price, you’re paid on the spot.

What’s the best place to sell a gold chain?

Somewhere that tests and weighs your chain in front of you, shows you how the price is worked out and never rushes you. At Vivid Jewels, you get a spreadsheet with every number, and you can take it home.

How much is my gold chain worth?

It depends on the weight, the karat and the day’s gold price. Heavier chains hold more gold, so weight makes a big difference.

Where is the stamp on a gold chain?

Usually on the clasp, or on a small tag or ring next to it. Your phone’s camera can zoom in to read it.

What does 750 mean on a gold chain?

750 means 18ct gold, which is 75% pure gold. 375 means 9ct, 585 means 14ct and 916 means 22ct.

Is a hollow chain worth less?

A hollow chain holds less gold than a solid chain of the same size, so it’s usually worth less. The scale shows the difference.

How can I tell if my chain is real gold?

Look for a stamp, then try a magnet. If a magnet grabs it, it isn’t solid gold. For a sure answer, have it tested for free, in front of you. Read how to tell if gold is real.

Do you buy broken or knotted chains?

Yes. Snapped links, knots and missing clasps don’t matter. Chains are bought for their gold.

Can I sell my chain and keep the pendant?

Yes. You can sell the chain on its own, or sell both. If the pendant has stones, those are checked too.

Is a designer chain worth more?

A designer chain can be worth more than its gold, especially if it’s in good condition.

Is the quote free?

Yes. It’s a free quote with no obligation. Sit down, take your time, and if you like the price, you’re paid on the spot. If not, you’re free to walk away. We love jewellery and we’re always happy to help.

If I don’t sell now, do I get the same price when I come back?

The price is set by the gold price on the day you sell. When you come back, we just change the day’s gold price and the whole list updates.
